Before I die I want to…

Leave it to the Three Rivers Arts Festival to challenge and inspire Pittsburghers with thought-provoking art.

Via the “Before I Die” exhibit, three large chalk walls in Theater Square prompt people to ponder and share their hopes and dreams. Over the last few days, hundreds have picked up the chalk and shared. This work of artist Candy Chang is the 475th “Before I Die” wall around the globe.

Peoples’ reflections have to do with both the “being” and “doing” of living. Certain responses show up over and over again (“be happy”). Collectively, they are amusing, ambitious, heart-breaking, and inspirational.

Among the “doing” responses, here were a few standouts:

Before I die I want to…

  • Run Boston
  • Go skinny dipping
  • Meet Beyonce
  • Hike the Appalachian Trail
  • Fight a bear (???)
  • Train my dog
  • Make a difference
  • Meet God and skydive

And among the “being” responses:

Before I die I want to…

  • Be amazing
  • Be free
  • Be happy
  • Be alive
  • Find love
  • Find a reason to live
  • Live!

And the response of one very contented person: “I already have everything.”

To all who are in Pittsburgh and southwestern PA, these are your neighbors – laughing, celebrating, hurting, searching, and living. Stop by the Arts Fest and put out there into the world what’s next for you. Even if only scribbled in chalk, your aspirations may move more people than you realize.
