We all know that trails have served as a vital outlet for people during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why I accepted when Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) asked me to lead a research project on the pandemic’s impact on Pennsylvania trails.

I collaborated with PEC and Brian Malcarne of York College to assess how the surge in trail use has affected trails and those who manage them. We surveyed dozens of trail managers and also used electronic trail counts to produce the Spring Report. We repeated the research in the fall and will soon be reporting on findings representative of the full 2020 season.
